Drone technology was used for the first time yesterday by the Ministry of Agriculture, to assist in the Initial Damage Assessments that is currently being conducted, to gauge the extent of losses sustained during the recent floods.

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Vinesh Kumar says it was an exciting time for the Ministry to utilise modern technology for efficiency and accuracy purposes.

Kumar says using the drone will provide them with a clearer and wider view of the flood damages caused by TC Cody and it will help them match the data collated via the digital data collection toolbox.

He adds this will allow them to have a much better indication of the extent of damages and come up with solutions to assist their farmers to get back on their feet.

Kumar also says almost 200 officers from the Ministry are currently engaged in the Initial Damage Assessment exercise, which is coming to a conclusion to make way for the Detailed Damage Assessment to follow, if necessary.
