The Ministry of Fisheries and the Fiji Navy confiscated 95 undersized mud crabs during enforcement spot checks in the Central Division following complaints of illegal sales, which breach the Fisheries Act.
The enforcement spot checks were conducted at fish markets last weekend and the mud crabs were released back into the sea.
The team also seized triton or davui and conch shells, as they are protected under the Fisheries Act.
The Ministry has cautioned vendors against selling undersized crabs, emphasizing that crabs must reach maturity before they can be harvested.
Vendors were also reminded to adhere to the 12.5cm size limit to avoid future confiscations.
This initiative aligns with efforts to sustain and advocate for a resourceful ecosystem for future generations.
