74 children living with childhood cancer in Fiji are currently being supported by WOWS Kids Fiji.

While speaking at their International Childhood Cancer Day celebration at Tanoa Plaza Hotel, WOWS Kids Fiji Foundation Co-founder Sina Kami says 45 children are from the Central and Northern Divisions while 29 children are from the Western Division.

She adds 13 children died from cancer last year compared to five in 2020.

The Pediatric Registrar at the CWM Hospital Doctor Savenaca Seduadua says he has worked in pediatrics for about eight years and he still sees many parents looking to traditional forms of treatment first.

He says it is important for parents to understand that early intervention equals successful outcomes.

Doctor Seduadua adds in one case, a child patient did not survive as he was brought in with severe bone pain which had been going on for months.

He says annually, they diagnose 20 to 30 childhood cancer cases and most of it is leukemia.
