66 people of Tavuto Settlement in Sigatoka now have a safe and reliable source of water after the commissioning of a borehole project by Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Jone Usamate.

Usamate says the community has experienced critical water shortages annually especially during the dry season and this $47,000 project brings the assurance of an improved, reliable and sustainable supply of water.

He says when communities have ample water, they thrive and their health, farming and economy can also steadily improve when water is readily available.

The Minister has also highlighted that the villagers should continue to use other reliable and safe water sources, for example, rainfall harvesting which should not be neglected and should be maintained to supplement groundwater.

He says groundwater must be prudently managed and should not be used as the ultimate water source to solve all water problems and should be protected from any potential sources of contamination.
