65-year-old Joeli Fatafei of Nawamagi in Sigatoka is proving that farming can be a reliable source of income and opportunity.

With more than 40 years of experience, the father of five has developed seven acres of mataqali land into a productive farm supplying local markets, hotels and restaurants.

Fatafei’s cassava production increased from 32,760 kilograms in 2023 to 36,400 kilograms in 2024, earning over $91,000, while his vegetable output reached 63,482 kilograms, generating more than $122,000.

Through careful planning and reinvestment, he has continued to expand his operations, investing in farming equipment, his home and his children’s education.

As President of the Maolelei Cooperative, Fatafei is also supporting nearby farmers by creating employment opportunities and strengthening local food supply.

His farm is now set to benefit from improved storage facilities through support from the Commercial Agriculture Development Program, which will help meet growing demand from markets in Denarau and Sigatoka.

Fatafei says his journey shows that with dedication and hard work, farming can provide a stable income and a better future for families and communities.
