A 59-year-old bus driver of Yako, Nadi is reported to be the country’s latest road fatality victim after he allegedly lost control of the bus he was driving along the Sonaisali Road in Nadi early this morning and caused the bus to veer off the road and hit a post.

Police confirm that the victim died at the scene and a post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death as investigations continue.

Police say two serious accident cases were also recorded in the last 24-hour period.

They say the first accident was recorded along Queens Road, near Navutu in Sigatoka yesterday morning where a 34-year-old female teacher lost control of the vehicle she was driving causing it to veer off the road.

She was rushed to the Sigatoka Hospital and later transferred to the Lautoka Hospital where she remains admitted.

Another serious accident occurred in Sigatoka where a vehicle driven by another 34-year-old woman veered off the road in Lawai, Sigatoka yesterday afternoon.

As a result of this 4 of the victims were admitted to the Sigatoka Hospital while two others were transferred to the Lautoka Hospital.

Chief Operations Officer Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu says a total of 314 drivers were booked for speeding from Wednesday morning to Friday at 6am.

ACP Driu says despite the advisories and warnings issued, there still appears to be a complete disregard for road safety as reflected in the number of infringement notices issued for speeding.

He says attitudes need to change where road safety is seriously needed to be followed if we are to keep our roads safe for all.

The road death toll stands at 24 compared to 9 for the same period last year.
