About 54 Fijians living in the urban and suburban areas of the Western and Central Division who have lost their jobs will be given materials to start their own nurseries by the Ministry of Agriculture as they have signed an agreement with the UK Government.
The agreement sees the UK Government provide about $53,000 in assistance that will be used in getting the materials for the nurseries. Minister for Agriculture, Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the materials will include seedlings, silon cloth, plastic covering, pipes and fastening materials used to construct a 16.5m x 3.5m nursery.
Each nursery costs about $1,000.
He says people will be able to construct these nurseries in their own backyard and will be able to earn about $7,000 to $10,000 per yield.
The Minister adds that these people will also be able to provide seedlings to their own communities through their nursery business.
Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Fiji, George Edgar says these nurseries will enable people who have lost their jobs to provide food security and livelihood for their families.
He says this also a cause for action for the recipients wider community.
