500 EFL workers threaten strike action in Feb, EFL silent
About 500 workers of Energy Fiji Limited could go on strike on the 15th of February as the Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji has issued a strike notice after claims that EFL is refusing to engage in meaningful discussions regarding their 2024-25 Log of Claim.

The union claims EFL refuses to negotiate a 10 percent wage increase for 2024 and 2025 respectively, refuses to pay shift allowances to shift workers, live-line allowances to crane operators and upgrade the pay rates of live-line workers.

Union National Secretary John Paul says unless there is meaningful engagement, EFL workers will go on strike on the 15th of February.

He says this action will result in major disruption nationwide.

The union has apologised to the people of Fiji for the inconvenience this action may cause.

He claims unfortunately, this situation has been brought about by the irresponsible and arrogant conduct of the current EFL management, which has consistently refused to negotiate in good faith.

Paul adds the union remains open to dialogue and urges EFL to act responsibly to avoid disruption to the nation.

He says the union looks forward to their meeting with Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh on Monday to try and resolve the issue.

Paul also confirms receiving a writ of summons from EFL for alleged defamation.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News, EFL says they have received the notice of strike dated 9th January from the union.

They say the notice includes issues which is part of the Trade Dispute 4 of 2025 pending determination before the Arbitration Court.

EFL says no further statements can be made as the matter is before the court.
