5 police officers among 274 people charged with serious offences last year
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirms 274 people were charged with a total of 344 counts of serious crime offences last year.

Of the 274 accused persons, five were police officers and 18 were under the age of 18 years.

There were 198 victims of the 344 counts of serious offences.

Of the 198 victims, there were 32 cases where the accused and victim were related to one another.

There were a total of 13 murder cases, four attempted murder cases, four manslaughter cases, and one case of manslaughter arising from a breach of duty filed in the High Court last year. 

There were 54 cases of aggravated robbery, one attempted aggravated robbery, and one robbery, while 50 cases of aggravated burglary, two attempted aggravated burglaries, and 10 burglaries were filed.

The data also shows 63 theft cases and two cases of receiving stolen property.

In addition, there were nine arson cases and one attempted arson case, alongside six cases of grievous harm and four serious assault cases.

The ODPP recorded 27 cases of acts with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 26 cases of assault causing actual bodily harm, and six cases of unlawful wounding.

There were two cases of wrongful confinement, 12 cases of criminal intimidation, and one case of criminal trespass.

Drug-related offences included three cases of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and two cases of unlawful importation of illicit drugs.

Other offences recorded were one kidnapping case, one case of bribery of a public official, two cases of giving false information to a public official, one case of failure to give fingerprints, one case of personation, and one case of failure to comply with requirements after an accident. 

The number of offences recorded each month were 21 in January, 24 in February, 18 in March, 34 in April, 17 in May, 40 in June, 52 in July, 32 in August, 23 in September, 41 in October, 31 in November, and 11 in December.

A total of 11 cases were withdrawn in 2025 due to various reasons.
