ANZ Country Head Saud Minam says around 30% of their customers whose loans were deferred under the COVID-19 Relief Package have returned to some form of repayment and they expect this number to grow.

He says some are only paying interest, some are making reduced payments and interest while some customers are making full payment and interest.

Minam says a number of customers are keen to get back on track and that is important because interest continues to accrue while a customer is on relief.

More than 2700 loans were deferred by ANZ last year to assist people who were affected by COVID-19.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had announced last year that banks have agreed to extend the loan repayment holiday till the 31st of March this year.

When questioned on what will happen after this deadline, Minam says they understand that a number of their customers are still feeling the effects and ANZ will continue to support customers who continue to need relief options beyond 31st March.

He says they are continuing to talk to their customers and work with them on a package that suits their needs.
