296 people have died on Fiji’s roads over the past five years.
Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga presented the figures at the National Transport Infrastructure Consultative Forum, emphasising the need for a collaborative approach to road safety.
He says the forum allows government departments, non-governmental organisations, and stakeholders to come together and discuss the issues affecting the transport industry.
Lutunauga says that, despite ongoing road safety campaigns, fatalities remain high, with police particularly concerned about unsafe behaviours by drivers and pedestrians.
He stressed that the police can only take preventative measures, such as increasing visibility at accident-prone “black spots” and enforcing traffic laws.
He says that ultimately, road safety is a whole-of-country issue, and every citizen must act responsibly to make our roads safer.
