15-year-old Narieta Disaurara of Savusavu who saved her 7-year-old brother from a house fire was today awarded a bravery medal by the President Jioji Konrote.
The year 9 student of Saint Bedes College says although she suffered serious burns, she did not lose hope as she wanted to save both her and her brother on the 26th of May last year.
Disaurara says all her siblings ran out when their house caught fire.
Disaurara says when their house was on fire, she then put her brother in the shower with the tap on, while she broke 18 louvre blades and put down their shutters to try and get them out.
Disaurara says as soon as they got out, there was a blast in the room.
Her mother, Camari Nataro says she was at work on the day but is grateful to Disaurara for saving one of her sons.
Nataro says even though they lost everything in the fire, she is forever blessed for the life of her children.
