Acting Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Sekove Naqiolevu stated today that 110 people have reached out to make submissions or statements to the Commission since its establishment.
Qiolevu highlighted this at their head office saying hearings are designed to be non-adversarial, and they always consider the emotional and security needs of participants.
He says this approach allows survivors to speak openly and without fear.
The Acting Chairperson reiterates that no individual can be publicly named without their express consent unless their identity has already been legally established or voluntarily disclosed.
Naqiolevu says this protects all participants and keeps the process safe, fair, and survivor-centred.
Rachna Nath who is one of the Commissioners says they are here to listen, support, and guide Fiji towards healing.
Nath says their purpose is to promote social cohesion and promote healing through reconciliation.
She says the FTRC is an institution mandated by parliament, and commissioners are appointed and replaced through an independent process under section 5.
Nath stresses that their task is to create a safe space for survivors and witnesses to share their stories and contribute to long-term reconciliation.
