Unsafe food can lead to over 200 diseases – Health Minister
Minister for Health, Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu

When food is unsafe due to harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical contaminants, it can lead to up to 200 diseases, ranging from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions.

Minister for Health, Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu highlighted this during the World Food Day celebrations in Labasa and asked people to be careful with what they consume.

Lalabalavu says the past decade revealed troubling statistics concerning cases of food and fish poisoning, leading to severe illnesses that are preventable.

He says that producers and consumers must ensure that the food on the table is safe, however, unforeseen circumstances can sometimes compromise food safety.

The Minister further says some measures can minimise the risk of illness.

Lalabalavu adds that we must take action when food is unsafe.
