New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it would be "dangerous" for New Zealand's border to be reopened as coronavirus continues to spread overseas.

Her comments on the future of the country's border were made at a press conference today.

The number of active cases in New Zealand remains at 22. All active cases have recently returned from overseas and are in managed isolation facilities. There have been no cases of community transmission.

Ardern says she has seen today and across the past week, calls for their borders to be opened to the world, a world where the virus is escalating, not slowing, and not even peaking in some countries yet.

Ardern said New Zealand has made hard gains to get to where it is, and as a Government, it had "no intention of squandering them".

She adds the idea that they should open their border in this environment has a price, and that price could be a second wave of COVID-19 in NZ at worst, and at best, added restrictions for the rest of them.

Ardern says that they want to open the border as soon as it is safe to do so.
