The Fiji Labour Party will be having its Annual Conference this Saturday where the party's plans for next year's general elections are expected to be discussed.
Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry says the rapidly deteriorating state of the sugar industry is a matter of great concern for them. Chaudhry says they will devote some time to listening to the farmers on this issue.
He says something has to be done urgently to save the livelihoods of the thousands of families who depend on it.
Chaudhry adds Labour has the expertise and the commitment to do the job.
He says the high cost of food and other basic household items is taking its toll on the poor and there is evidence of rising poverty levels and joblessness in both the urban and rural areas.
Chaudhry says the young people are restless and frustrated for lack of opportunities to make a life of their own.
He says amidst such deprivation, it is disturbing to see the Government spending recklessly on overseas trips.
The conference will be at 10.30am at Tilak High School in Lautoka.
